Tyre Information

Looking After Your Tyres

Taking proper care of your tyres and checking them regularly is vital for your vehicle’s performance and most importantly, staying safe on the Isle of Man’s roads. If you look after your tyres, they are likely to last longer too. Here’s our top tips for keeping your tyres in great condition.

Check Tyre Pressure

We recommend checking your tyre pressure with a pressure gauge regularly. These can be found at most petrol stations and can be done in just a few minutes. Overinflation and underinflation can cause a variety of issues and put you at greater risk of an accident, as well as leading to faster wear and tear. The correct tyre pressure for your vehicle can be found in your vehicle handbook. We also offer free tyre pressure checks which can be done while you wait, walk-ins welcome!

Check Tyre Tread

By law, tyre tread needs to be a minimum of 1.6mm but we recommend changing your tyres before they reach this limit. Good tyre tread helps to reduce the risk of aquaplaning and improves your grip on the road. We recommend checking your tread at least once a month.

Other Checks

As well as checking tyre pressure and tread, it is important to look out for any external damage. This might include small bumps, cuts or cracks and, once identified, should be investigated immediately by a specialist.

Don’t Overload Your Vehicle

Overloading your vehicle with more weight than it can carry puts undue stress on your tyres and can compromise handling. The load information is available on your tyre sidewall and confirms the maximum weight you should be carrying. Tyre pressure can be adjusted for fully laden loads, you can check your handbook for further details.

Check Tyre Age

There is no legal limit for the age of tyres that are fitted to a vehicle as long as they are still in a good working order. As a general rule of thumb most tyres will start to perish after four or five years, which is usually noted by cracking in the sidewall of the tyres. When checking tyres always be sure to check the inner wall too.

Use Seasonal Tyres

It’s a common misconception that seasonal tyres are for extreme weather, i.e. snow, ice or excessive heat. But this is not the case at all. Using summer and winter tyres is one of the most effective ways to extend the life of your tyres and ensure the best driving experience in all conditions.

Wheel Alignment

We recommend having your wheel alignment checked every 2-3 months. It’s a vital part of making sure your tyres wear evenly and not just on the inner or outer edge. Staying on top of your wheel alignment can save you money in the long run and prolong the life of your tyres. General suspension wear or running over bumps, sleeping policemen and pot holes and can be the main causes of misalignment.

If you’re not sure, let Island Tyres & Autocare do a free tyre health check for you! This includes a tyre pressure check, tyre tread depth inspection and visual check to ensure your tyres are safe and fit for the road.
